Matt is passionate about improving the effectiveness of environment and development interventions through evaluation and learning. His core work areas at LTS relate to the design and management of monitoring and evaluation systems, including programme theory and impact evaluation design. He currently works on two DFID funded projects in Ethiopia which aim to improve economic opportunities and build resilience to climate extremes using market-based interventions (MORE and BRACED). Prior to joining LTS, Matt worked on a range of sustainable development projects in South Africa, from carbon sequestration projects to climate adaptation, invasive species control, and biodiversity conservation projects. During his postdoctoral fellowship at Stellenbosch University, he led the design of the first impact evaluation of the South African Working for Water public-works programme: Africa’s largest conservation and development programme. Prior to that he worked in South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs assisting with budget allocation decisions between its environmental programmes. Matt has a strong interdisciplinary academic background in economics, ecology and statistics. He has been lead-author on a number of high impact journal articles.
