Summary
The Project involves local communities in participatory soil and water conservation measures to improve the environment of the upper Citarik watershed and to increase farmers' incomes through improved farming systems more suited to the local environment and local markets. There is a parallel development study which is a two-year project preparation that will result in a second phase integrated participatory rural development and environmental management project for four more critical watersheds in the upper Citarum basin.
Problem
The project was designed to enhance the quality of the environment and improve food production in the Bandung area. The area suffers from acute soil erosion and inadequate water conservation. There is significant investment in dams in the region. There is a need to raise community awareness of the environmental problems and local practical mitigation methods to ensure that the predicted life of the dams can be maintained or extended.
Solution
LTS provided specialist expertise in NGO capacity building. This support assists a local NGO to: empower communities in the Citarik sub-watershed; improve self-reliance in the management of development activities and credit schemes; and advise on technical matters related to agricultural improvements and environmental awareness raising. These capacity building efforts prepare the ground for a smoother implementation of the follow-on project.
Benefits
LTS inputs facilitated the establishment of community-based natural resource management systems, empowered women through the introduction of participatory planning methodologies, provided private sector expertise in farm produce supply, processing and market access, and established small scale rural credit schemes and co-operative banks.
