Eastern Cape Community Forestry Pilot Project

Location South Africa
Start 1997
Finish 2002
Client DFID

Summary

The project supports the institutional change processes in forestry and is building Department of Water Affairs and Forestry's (DWAF) capacity in new spheres of policy and regulation.

Problem

The South African Government is strongly encouraging public sector reform and DFID is supporting reform in the water and forestry sectors. Restructuring of the state forestry sector is intended to increase efficiency of forestry management, enable a reprioritisation of public funds and improve the contribution of forestry to local development - through involving those previously excluded to participate in and benefit from forestry.

Solution

LTS provides technical expertise to support the process of institutional change and capacity building.

Benefits

The provision of these services has enabled DfID to maintain relevant support to DWAF throughout a time of rapid change in the public forest sector.
