LTS has provided support to the Darwin Initiative since 2003. Duties under this contract have included:
  • Applications management
  • Monitoring and evaluation

  • Technical support to projects
  • Lessons learning and communications
The Darwin Initiative supports developing countries and the UK Overseas Territories to conserve biodiversity and reduce poverty. The Darwin Initiative is the UK's flagship biodiversity grants and is funded by DEFRA, DFID and FCO. It provides grants for projects working in developing countries and UK Overseas Territories (OTs) and since 1992 has funded 861 projects in 158 countries. In 2014 it reached the milestone of over 100M pounds committed since 1992. LTS has been supporting the Darwin Initiative since 2003 providing expert advice and support to its management. This has included the design and implementation of an application scheme that accepts over 500 applications a year. We conduct all the monitoring and evaluation of Darwin's projects - in a normal year we can expect there to be 100 live projects. This includes monitoring of projects and evaluation of the programme and supporting Defra to report against its progress to the UK Government and to COPs for the Convention on Biological Diversity. Since 2011 this has additionally required us to monitor the impact the programme has had on poverty alleviation in developing countries as part of DFID's ODA commitments. In 2012 the Darwin Plus scheme was launched. This is the main route for funding for environment and climate change related issues in the UK's Overseas Territories. This was included under the Darwin Initiative programme as part of a rationalisation of UK Government funding which previously included the OTEP fund and Darwin Challenge Fund. LTS has supported this fund including application management, monitoring and evaluation and financial management since its launch in 2012.
