John Mayhew is an experienced sustainability consultant, with a career in advisory work that spans 20 years. His focus is on climate change and his technical training is in forestry.

In 1994, John began to work for DFID in Sri Lanka, where he provided technical assistance in forest inventory and surveying to forest officers in the Forest Department. Subsequently, he became a project manager on the Forest Research Programme, designing and delivering a project to research and to produce a manual on plantation grown mahogany.

His career in climate change began when he became a founding director of the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management Ltd in 1997. He developed and applied forest carbon growth models and an early emissions assessment method, which was widely applied before standardised methods emerged. He led many consultancy projects on carbon storage and assessment of carbon emissions of organisations, supply chains and products.

John joined AEA Technology in 2004 as a Principal Consultant. He became much more active in the public sector, advising central and local government on carbon management, climate change policy and strategy. In 2007, he joined Hyder Consulting as Head of Climate Change, with responsibility for building related business. He managed many projects for companies in the water and property sectors. He focused on the assessment of climate change risk and worked on the design of long-term adaptation strategies.

John became an independent consultant in 2010, and was extensively involved in climate change throughout the region including current advisory support to both the Ethiopia SCIP and GGGE. John joined LTS in July 2013 as Practice Leader on Climate Change and became a Director in 2014.
