Never before has the interface between environment and society been such a key determinant for economic development. We have built a team of multi-ecosystem specialists who are able to provide technical expertise at the ecosystem and landscape level: They take integrated approaches that deliver development benefits to the poor. The inclusion of water resources management into our team has enabled us to more comprehensively deal with the complexities of the management of ecosystem services. Key Services of our E&E practice area: - To maximise the multiple livelihood benefits good management brings, we provide advice and support to managers, owners and users incorporating best practice in participatory, local, forest and land-use management.
- We design, manage, evaluate and advise on biodiversity and protected areas management across ecosystems and use this to inform our policy advice when developing conservation policy and strategy.
- Our work in water resources management is based on an applied understanding of the tools and techniques available to support sustainable resource management from policy to practice, at a cost that society can afford.
- We continue to be called upon to provide practical advice on technical, political or socio-economic aspects of natural resources management and the multi-faceted links with poverty, health, biodiversity, agriculture, forestry, economic growth and climate change.
Towards an age of convergence… an age of sustainability Our global exposure, knowledge and expertise give us this unique ability to blend the social, economical and environmental considerations into society’s aims for sustainable development. Protected areas for example, remain a corner stone of biodiversity conservation and provide numerous ecosystem services yet this has often come at a price for the surrounding communities. Using learning from LTS’ extensive experience in improving rural livelihoods through better ecosystem and resource management, we have developed community-level financing models that allow local beneficiaries to capture and utilise the environmental service benefits from well managed protected areas. The Environment and Economy practice works closely with our Governance and Climate Change practices as we believe these three elements are critically interdependent.
