Understanding the implications and appraising the response… An increasing awareness and understanding of climate change is leading many governments, industries and individuals to take positive steps to reduce their vulnerability to environmental changes. LTS is there to help them assess, review and develop practical, adaptation and mitigation strategies that strengthen their resilience to climate change. LTS has undertaken risk assessments for governments and international agencies, both general country-based and scenario-specific assessments, and has worked to develop and implement cross-sectoral planning for adaptation. We have also been invited to review potential environmental implications for agribusinesses located in developing countries. Our experience tells us that whilst adaptation plans need to be locally grounded, they need to be open to the rapidly developing national and international policy and development-cooperation processes. We are able to bring our experience of M&E and adaptive management to bear in this context. Land use change, mostly deforestation, accounts for 18-25% of global annual greenhouse gas emissions and our climate change adaptation services are linked to our specialist forestry knowledge, through which we offer carbon mitigation services covering sequestration, modelling and forest carbon management at company and governmental levels. Similarly, the Climate Change practice works closely with the Economy and Environment team supporting community based natural resource management. |
