Case Studies: The Americas
Peru, Understanding water use in Ica: the implications of water governance and climate change for social equity and sustainable economic development, 2009, Progressio.

Focus Areas: Climate Change Environment & Economy

This piece of work was driven by demand within Peru for a better understanding of water use and governance issues within Ica province, in order to support social equity and sustainable economic development in the face of a changing climate. LTS provided the Team Leader / international consultant on this project, who developed the research methodology, coordinated the research in close liaison with Progressio’s Policy and Advocacy Officer, Peru’s country representative and other relevant partners, collected and analyzed relevant data in-country and produced a detailed final report. The report discussed the social, environmental and economic implications of water use in Ica; factors that determine the water use and what are the root causes of the water use outcomes observed; the likely implications of climate change for water resources and water users in Ica; and identified priorities for future water resource governance which is socially equitable, environmentally sustainable and which supports economic development.

Montserrat, A study for the establishment of a multiple use marine park, 2007-2008, Montserrat Tourist Board.

Focus Areas: Environment & Economy

LTS was contracted to take a lead in this study. Specific tasks included reviewing the relevant documents, convening a stakeholders workshop to provide local technical input and ensuring stakeholder support and determining, in consultation with major stakeholders and the wider community, the location and extent of the site or sites for establishment of a sustainable, multiple use marine protected area. LTS also conducted a survey to identify the boundaries, zones, potential boundary marker sites, potential dive sites, and generalised surveys to record species richness and diversity within the area of the proposed Marine Protected Area; this provided a proposed monitoring methodology, tested at several sites. LTS staff also prepared a comprehensive sustainable multiple-use marine park management plan for use by the Government of Montserrat, which accommodates within appropriate management regimes a broad spectrum of human activities compatible with the primary goal of a marine protected area.

Ecuador and Guyana, Development Potential of Chainsaw Logging and Milling and Associated Decision Guide, 2006, UK Department for International Development - Forestry Research Programme.
Focus Areas:  Specialist forestry services and carbon

This was a research project designed to clarify the conversion efficiency of chainsaw log conversion, the flow of costs and benefits that arise and the potential for improving skills and lowering impacts through application of modified reduced logging techniques. The starting point was a comprehensive strategic review of chainsaw conversion, from which the experimental protocols for the field studies were developed. The results from the marketing, conversion and socio-economic studies when combined with the questionnaire outcomes provided the basis for the decision support system. This provides guidance at policy, planning and practitioner levels on how to identify situations where chainsaw conversion could be appropriate and on the conditions, support and control systems that may be required. The project held a regional workshop in Guyana jointly with FAO Regional Forestry Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Guyana, Timber Forest Products Marketing Study, 2001, Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development.
