LTS’ support to the EU-Malaysia Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) aims to strengthen forest governance, as well as to contribute to sustainable forest management and equitable development in Malaysia within the scope of the VPA. The LTS consortium was awarded a contract in late 2011, and will commence upon the signing of the VPA in mid-2012 for a period of 4 years and deliver technical and project management support to Malaysia to help put in place policies, legislation and institutional arrangements to implement its timber Legality Assurance System (LAS). The long-term team in place from 2012-2016 will work directly under the VPA Secretariat and support licensing authorities throughout the country - the Malaysian Timber Industries Board in Peninsula Malaysia and in Sabah and the Sarawak Timber Industries Development Corporation in Sarawak. The success of the Malaysia FLEGT process will have regional and global impacts on timber trade if managed successfully.
