Qualifications
Rob has a M.Phil by dissertation in Botany (natural and social science) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa (2001), and B.Sc. in Ecology from Loughborough University, UK (1982). Rob’s professional qualifications include being recognised as a Chartered Environmentalist (C.ENV.) and a Member of the Instituted of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM).
Rob is our in-house natural resource management specialist with 22 years experience in ecosystem-based conservation management and sustainable development. He has an in-depth knowledge of biodiversity, protected areas management, governance, community conservation, sustainable use and sustainable livelihoods. He has been particularly concerned with efforts to reduce poverty in the context of protected areas and natural resource management and is experienced in the sharing of conservation benefits and promoting alternative livelihoods.
Rob is an experienced overseas team leader working with CARE, DFID and WWF on conservation projects in East Africa and the Caribbean over a period of 16 yeas. He has experience of numerous ecosystems from montane, lowland and coastal tropical moist and dry forests, coastal and marine habitats including coral reefs, small islands and temperate grasslands and woodland.
He is active in the IUCN Commissions being a member of the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and the Commission on Environment, Economics and Social Policy. He is the Leader of the Task Force on Cultural and Spiritual Values of Protected Areas (CSVPA, www.csvpa.org ) and a core member of the Theme on Indigenous and Local Communities, Equity and Protected Areas (TILCEPA). For these two entities he leads on an initiative to link the performing arts and protected areas.
For LTS Rob is Programme Director for the Applications, Monitoring and Evaluation Component of the Darwin Initiative funded by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) within the Edinburgh Centre of Tropical Forests partnership
